Old fashioned code line still rules
While much of CSX's CTC routes have received upgrading to ATCS, code line still is the primary means of communication to control points along CSX's S-line. It looks as if at one point the SAL ran the code line through the tube alongside the pole and underground, but now CSX evidently just routes it through the elements. The top tier is presumably a de-energized power lines that the railroad once supplied on its own, commercial power now comes in just behind the SAL pole.

Eugene Cain General You are correct. SAL had their own Power on these poles. Each wire carried 2200 volts!!! Enough to Fry your Eggs!!!! This was just one of SAL's many unique features. Also, at locations where they used concrete Signal Houses, there was a small structure nearby with a gas powered Generator located inside. This was to power the CTC coding and carrier equipment located n the larger concrete Signal House. There are still many of those concrete structures in use today along the S Line. Most of the wires are gone now and much of the S Line uses Satelite technology. 10/10/2012 11:49:04 AM
Eugene Cain General Oh yeah, SAL had buried code line as well as duel pole lines. The code line was installed in the 50s for the most part. Down here where I live...i am only a few miles from the Charleston-Savannah abandoned freight route. I found several areas where the code line had been unearthed when the ROW was converted to a hiking trail. I have several long lenghts of the cable...a 2 conductor copper wire incased in plastic or some similar material and then covered with insulation. The cable is about s thick as a dime. 10/10/2012 11:54:01 AM
Carter Buchanan General Thanks for the info Eugene. I made a trip here for the first time since I made those pics in 2005. All the pole line and signals are replaced with the standard CSX hooded signals. I was riding with someone else, so no opportunity to try to figure out how to do a updated picture for this somewhat hidden location. 4/10/2016 2:43:27 AM
