Looking westward on the C&WC
Title:  Looking westward on the C&WC
Description:  Looking west you can see the concrete base for the westbound home signal for the former diamond. Wiring has been cut, but can be seen cut flush with the concrete. The old C&WC was operated by the Port Royal Railroad up until recently, now Coosaw entirely silent and the rails rusting.

What signal was here?
Title:  What signal was here?
Description:  OK, I think I may have an idea of what kind of signal was here. If it was anything like some old searchlight style signals right at the interlockings of diamonds at Cheraw (ACL) and Denmark (ACL) that I have seen in pictures, I would love to know what it was for. It couldnt have been just for diamond protection since this diamond had evidence of home signal protection around it.

Looking north on the old SAL Charleston Subdivision
Title:  Looking north on the old SAL Charleston Subdivision
Description:  This was SAL's Charleston Sub, basically running parallel with ACL's Charleston Sub. Mother nature has done a good job reclaiming what was hers, but it is still easy to see where the Seaboard used to slice through this area. Just to the left, you can make out the former southbound home signal base, and also, you can barely make out a connection that ran in the NW quaderant of the diamond between the old C&WC and SAL lines. Why this would have existed is beyond me since there was also one that was in the SW quad.

Looking southward on the old SAL line (SH-line).
Title:  Looking southward on the old SAL line (SH-line).
Description:  Again, thick foliage has pretty much dominated the old Seaboard freight main. You can see the old C&WC in the background and the concrete base was the southward home signal. I can only imagine the ink of the ACL/SAL merger hadn't even dried when SCL forces moved in to tear out the line north of this point, however, this line actually existed south of this point as the Coosaw Subdivision of the SCL Savannah division. From timetables, a connection existed between the SAL and the C&WC in the SE quad basically creating a alternate mainline between Yemassee, SC on the ACL and Savannah, GA. Also, two sidings that were once standard 100 car length SAL sidings were actually increased to 160 car capacity at Boyd and Levy and SCL continued the use of CTC installed by the SAL on this segment, however, the timetable didn't list schedules for this Sub and later the whole thing to Savannah would dissappear.
